Canada’s Competition Bureau has said it will study a proposed merger between the country’s two largest grain handlers after Saskatchewan Wheat Pool (SWP) made a hostile bid for Agricore United. If the bureau lets the takeover proceed the new company would own more than half of Western Canada’s grain handling capacity.
Farm groups and provincial politicians in Western Canada have expressed concern that it would reduce the level of competition for grain farmers on the Prairies and at export facilities in Vancouver and Thunder Bay....
