The development of the aluminium smelter at the new port of Coega in South Africa has been cast in doubt yet again. The project was originally expected to be constructed by French firm Pechiney but the company’s takeover by Alcan of Canada delayed development by several years.
The Canadian company eventually agreed to proceed with the venture in November last year, following the conclusion of a power purchase agreement with South African power company Eskom. This seemed to set the seal on the success of the entire combined Coega port and industrial project, given that the smelter was regarded as the scheme’s anchor tenant....
