The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) has disputed a proposal of the federal Surface Transport Ministry for a Rs160 (US$3.7) per ton wharfage charge on the coal to be handled at the new Ennore port, which is under construction 24 km north of Chennai (Madras) in the south of India.
Currently, Chennai port handles TNEB's entire annual coal requirement of 10mt. TNEB pays a wharfage charge of Rs32 (US$0.74) per ton and spends another Rs240 (US$5.6) per ton to move the coal to its 630MW power station in north Chennai....
