Gantry grab unloaders continue to be the most favoured solution for high capacity ship discharge duties, although continuous unloaders (CSUs) present a viable alternative, particularly on environmental grounds for dedicated, commodity specific terminals, such as coal-fired power stations, cement terminals, fertiliser plants, etc.
However, there appears to be renewed interest in jib type cranes, either level luffing or counterbalanced designs. Their (generally) lower throughput capacity is offset by lower investment costs and also by their ability to handle general and unitised cargoes as well as bulk and, in a 4-rope configuration, heavy lifts....
