Log handling and stacking applications are varied and, accordingly, a wide range of machines that can do the job is available. They range from front end loaders from OEMs such as Volvo or Komatsu equipped with a grapple, to dedicated plant equipped with telescopic boom designs.
There is a gulf between the approach of North American operators on the one hand and European companies on the other. The latter tend to focus on smaller but highly manoeuvrable plant whereas US operators prefer a more traditional approach with ultralarge machines, whose overall size may not be in direct proportion to lift capacity....
