Self-propelled barges will reduce shipping times to domestic markets
The first of a series of three 12,000 mt capacity self propelled barges has been put into service by one of PT Adaro Indonesia’s barging contractors to service domestic markets.
These barges have a loaded speed of 10 knots which is double that of conventional towed units and will help Adaro maintain reliable and efficient supply to its domestic customers in all weather conditions.
The second unit will commence operations in December with the third following earl in 2009.
With the completion of the new deeper Barito River access channel by the end of 2008, larger self-propelled barges will be able to transit and plans are underway for the first of a new series of 15,000 mt units to be operational by the end of 2009.
Adaro's sales to both export and domestic markets reached 36 mt in 2007.
