Rail options for Zanaga

Zanaga Iron Ore Company Ltd is confident that the iron ore market has recovered sufficiently for it to push ahead with the development of its Congolese mine.

Glencore owns a 50% plus one share stake in the project, with the remainder held by Zanaga Iron Ore Company Ltd (ZIOC), which is registered in the British Virgin Islands. It is now assessing its options for transporting ore from the project “utilising road and potentially rail transportation solutions”.

The mine is to be developed in two phases: with 12 Mtpa in the first stage, and an additional 18 Mtpa in Phase 2 that can be sustained over at least 30 years.

Development has been held up by lower than anticipated international demand and prices for iron ore, but the partners have already secured the required mining licence and mining convention from the government. An application for an environmental permit has also been submitted.

Clifford Elphick, ZIOC’s non-executive chairman, said: “Despite the continued challenge of securing funding for large-scale developments, the Zanaga Iron Ore Project has enjoyed another year of positive momentum on the ground.

“We feel encouraged by signs of improved health in the global mining industry and the iron ore sector specifically. The iron ore price rise at the start of 2017 was stronger and faster than anticipated, although there has been a subsequent fall back.”

Assessing the global market, Elphick added: “The supply expansion will, to some extent, have been counteracted by the suspension of production by a number of high-cost Chinese domestic producers and seaborne suppliers entering the final phases of their mine lives. However, it remains the case that the final equilibrium price is difficult to forecast.”
