J Clubb contract for GB Railfreight

GB Railfreight (GBRf) has won a contract with J Clubb Ltd, a British-based aggregates and concrete company.

The agreement will see GBRf move ash from Cottam Power Stations in Nottinghamshire to the HH Celcon brick works in Borough Green, near Sevenoaks in Kent.

The first train ran on 4 July and the contract will last for 12 months. GBRf will be transporting the ash for use in the manufacture of ‘aircrete’ blocks, which are then used in the building and construction sector.

John Smith, managing director at GBRf, said: “This contract win is great news, not just for GBRf, but for both J Clubb and HH Celcon as well. It is a vote of confidence in GBRf and its ability to deliver a quality service for clients, as well as our aim to ensure as much freight as possible in the UK is moved by rail. We are delighted to be working with J Clubb on this, and hope that a long-term partnership develops in the coming months.”

Ed Surman, production director of HH Celcon, said: “I’ve just reviewed GBRf’s performance since it began the rail haulage service. The service has been first class, every train scheduled has run, it has never been short of a single wagon, and the quantities have been on target. Thanks to all involved at GBRf in making this work, moving this business has been a revelation. I wish we had done it sooner.”

GBRf has a fleet of more than 130 locomotives and 1,100 wagons. Its team of 650 people operates over 1,000 trainloads a week, moving 15% of the UK’s rail freight.
