Storm Xavier topples grab crane

With gusts up in excess of 90 mph, Storm Xavier toppled a gantry grab unloader in Wilhelmshaven last week

Ship-crane and crane-crane collisions occur globally, sometimes due to wind gusts causing crane runaways, but it is not often in Europe that one encounters wind gusts up to Beaufort 12 that drive cranes into the water.

But this is what happened at the Niedersachsenbrüke coal terminal in Wilhelmshaven last week, when Storm Xavier lifted a 1,000-tonne coal loader clean off the tracks and toppled it into the water.

Storm Xavier developed out of the North Atlantic last week, skirted the north of Britain and then pummelled Denmark and Germany on October 4th and 5th before moving into the Czech Republic, where gusts up to 160 mph were recorded in the mountains.

No-one was hurt in the Wilhelmshaven incident, but the storm caused a number of fatalities across Germany and power and rail services were badly disrupted.

The cost of the incident in Wilhelmshaven is estimated at €1M. The photo is from the German Press Agency.
