Dutch unions raise stakes with Ovet

Dutch transport trade union FNV Havens has issued dry bulk stevedore Ovet with an ultimatum over pay and conditions

Ovet operates terminals in Vlissingen (Flushing) and Terneuzen. Negotiations over renewal of the collective bargaining agreement have been ratcheted up by FNV Havens. The dockers’ trade union said that, if Ovet does not ‘budge’ before 1 March, industrial action will follow.

FNV Havens speaks on behalf of some 90 dockers working under the existing collective agreement (GLA), although it is not clear how many of them are its members. It is seeking higher pay and rejects Ovet’s compensatory demands for more flexibility in hiring, lower compensation for lay-offs and a more rigid roster for allocation of holidays.

FNV Havens’ ultimatum follows one issued by Ovet’s own workers, which led to brief stoppages. The union considers that wage increases promised in Ovet’s “final offer” are insufficient given the labour flexibility the company wants in return, and the absence of pay increases in 2015 and 2016. The offer on the table is for +2% in January 2018, +1% in July 2018 and +1% from January 2019, in addition to a “poor’ fixed grant” for 2017.

Ovet is owned by dry bulk major HES International (now up for sale) and Oxbow Transport of Rotterdam.
