...Beira railway on track

The first section of the railway between Zimbabwe and the Mozambican port of Beira on the Indian Ocean is to reopen at the end of this year. The line will mainly carry limestone, sugar and timber in the first instance but should also provide an export outlet for coal in the longer term.

The railway had been damaged as a result of attacks during Mozambique’s long civil war and has been unusable since 1984 but rehabilitation work should gradually bring the line back into use. A grant of $13M from the United States government enabled mines that had been planted along the railway to be cleared between 2002 and the end of last year.
