Great Lakes ships are the most carbonfriendly and efficient transport mode and a modal shift from marine vessels to trucks and/or rail would lead to increased levels of traffic congestion, higher infrastructure costs and significantly greater levels of noise. These were among the findings of a recently completed binational (US and Canada) study Environmental and Social Impacts of Marine Transport in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway Region.
