In the face of strong environmental opposition, one of the reasons thermal power plants are still retained is that the power generated is the lowest cost of any alternative. Germany has a strong industrial lobby which argues that expensive power makes its heavy industries uncompetitive. The Federation of German Industries is concerned that the cost of renewable energy subsidies, estimated at A200B, could increase energy prices substantially.
