US-based Hyndsight Vision Systems has introduced “Journey 1”, a lightweight, fully wire-free camera and monitor unit that can be used to monitor open cargo such as feedstuffs and livestock while in transit.
Supplied as a complete kit, Journey 1 includes a 4.8-inch wireless sunlight-readable monitor, a wideangle camera with a non-fish-eyed view, two flush mounts, an antenna set and two battery chargers, all in a water-resistant, protective case. The system can also be hardwired into the truck to provide power.
Up to three additional cameras can be paired to one in-cab monitor. They can be mounted anywhere on the trailer, allowing full 360 deg view.
The monitor will work up to 100 yards away from the camera, making the system suitable for any towing situation. The signals are wireless, with secure 2.4 GHz integration. All equipment can be readily demounted when not required.
Although the monitor is normally located in the truck cabin, the broadcast distance direct line of site of Journey 1 is around 600m. Hence, although Journey 1 is aimed at securing safe transport of unpredictable livestock and loose agricultural cargoes (e.g. avoiding ‘blow-offs’ of fodder, feeds, etc), it could have wider utility.
The images are in real time, so the system could be of interest for security and safety in the vicinity of the Eurotunnel Fréthun terminal and Calais ferry port.
Hyndsight is working on a version of Journey 1 that records images, so there would be a record if any of the devices were tampered with.
