Platinum upgrade

With platinum now fetching over US$600/oz, careful handling during the processing stage is paramount. The world's largest producer, Anglo Platinum, is currently upgrading its facilities in South Africa to meet increasing demand for this rare metal.

As part of the upgrade, two new pneumatic conveyor systems were required to handle platinum concentrate, a difficult substance which is both hydroscopic and abrasive. Buhler AG was awarded the contract to supply one system to move concentrate from the flash dryer into a 2500t storage silo and another to convey the concentrate from the silo to four furnace feed bins.
