Race against the weather

A team of engineers from the UKbased construction and engineering contractor Amalgamated Construction (Amco) is currently installing a new shiploading facility at the remote Svea Nord mine on the island of Spitsbergen.

Operated by state-owned Store Norske, Norway’s sole coal producer, the mine is most northerly in the world. Temperatures often plunge to -50degC and the sea freezes over from November to June, leaving only five months each year to transport stockpiled coal off the island.
