SA rail deals boost for RBCT...

South Africa’s Transnet has made two announcements that should help to secure increased coal volumes for Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT). First, BHP Billiton has signed a R24B (US$2.1B) “take or pay” contract with Transnet to transport coal to RBCT. Secondly, the state-owned transport utility has revealed it is planning to treble coal rail capacity from the Waterberg Basin to Richards Bay.

A Transnet spokesperson said: “The [BHP] deal will be adding close to 10 Mtpa in capacity on the line, from the current 73 Mtpa, over the next seven years. The agreement with BHP is a massive boost for certainty around Transnet’s capacity expansion programme on the export coal line.”
