Saudis kick off rail project
Maadin (the Saudi Mining Company) and construction giant Saudi Oger will jointly execute the US$2 bill, privatelymanaged, 1,500 km rail link between Jeddah and Dammam. The Saudi government will bear 50 percent of the project's cost, Saudi Communications Minister Dr Nasir Al-Salloum said recently.
Maadin plans to use the link to transport minerals between the Al-Zubaira and Jalameed belt regions. According to the plans, Maadin will transport 4.5 mta of phosphate from Jalameed to Jubail, as well as transport bauxite from Al-Zubaira to smelter plants in the eastern province.
