The port of Antwerp is developing new areas of business as a multimodal hub, and in March announced it would accommodate the world’s largest malt plant for brewing beer.
Axéréal, the French grain cooperative, is investing around €2M in the Boortmalt malt works to supply brewing giants, such as AnheuserBusch InBev and Heineken, and markets including South America, Africa and Asia.
Axéréal has 10 malt plants in Europe that produce 1.3 Mtpa of malt. The new investment will raise the capacity of the Antwerp plant from 360,000 tpa to 470,000 tpa. The French group has chosen Antwerp as its European port because
of its capacity to handle and store different cargoes, whether bulk, bagged or containerised goods.
