While the UK government lacks a coherent energy strategy, its main focus appears to be ABC – “anything but coal” – as it pursues a renewable energy path. But, with coal prices falling, mainly as a result of increased US exports displaced by its shale gas bonanza, coupled with increasing UK carbon taxes set to be introduced, thermal coal firing has actually increased.
