Cargill joins WindWings ship sail project

Leading grain shipper Cargill has joined UK-based BAR Technologies and Deltamarin in Finland to bring wind propulsion technology to commercial shipping.

Cargill joins WindWings ship sail project

BAR Technologies’ WindWings are solid wing sails up to 45m tall on deck. The number of sails to be fixed depends on the size of the vessel and the ship’s route.

 

WindWings are another design competing with new sailing cargo ship concepts, such as Rotor Sails (aka Flettner Rotors, Wärtsilä/Norsepower), Seawing Kites (Airbus/Airseas), Oceanbird (Swedish consortium) and Neoline (Cie Maritime Nantaise).

 

BAR Technologies is a spin-off of Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR), the British sailing racing team named after the Olympics multiple gold medallist.

 

“Through this partnership we will bring bespoke wind solution to customers who are actively seeking to reduce CO2 emissions from the supply chain,” said Jan Dieleman, President of Cargill’s Ocean Transportation business.

 

John Cooper, CEO of BAR Technologies, said: “Wind is a near marginal cost-free fuel and the opportunity for reducing emissions, alongside significant efficiency gains in vessel operating costs, is substantial.

 

“We have invested in our wind sail technology to provide vessel owners and operators with an opportunity to realize these efficiencies.”

 

It is expected that the first vessel to be equipped with the BAR Technologies’ WindWings will become operational by 2022, most likely a tanker, followed by a dry bulker (grain carrier).

 

Meanwhile, Wärtsilä has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) tied to a License and Cooperation agreement with UK-based Anemoi Marine Technologies for the future sales and servicing of Rotor Sail solutions to the shipping industry.
