Partners in the Athos project have launched an Expression of Interest (EoI) process for its Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) project.
Athos is a collaboration between Gasunie, EBN, the Port of Amsterdam and Tata Steel, working together on the development of a CCUS project in the North Sea Canal area.
Tata Steel announced last year that it aims to be a carbon neutral steelmaker in Europe by 2050. The company said that capturing CO2 from its steelmaking operations and either reusing it or storing it in empty gas fields under the North Sea could play an important role in helping to achieve that ambition.
Recently, the Athos parties completed a feasibility study and announced that Athos will conduct various follow-up studies. Athos is now inviting parties to express their interest in the CCUS project to gain a better understanding of which companies are seriously interested in using the planned CO2 transport and storage network. Companies that want to supply their captured CO2 and companies that want to purchase the CO2 for reuse are invited to participate.
The EoI includes questions about timing and volume of CO2 to be delivered or taken away. Athos said that more detailed questionnaire will be provided after mutual interest has been established. A Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA) is also to be concluded with companies completing the detailed questionnaire.
Tata Steel Ijmuiden NV is a consortium partner and potential user of the planned network. Tata will therefore not have access to the information provided by other potential users and will not be a party to such an NDA.
