Forestry deal for Helsinki’s Vuosaari

This is an important coup for the Port of Helsinki, which traditionally has never been strong in the forestry products exports sector compared to Rauma and HaminaKotka. The Äänekoski mill is closer to Rauma than Helsinki.

The port says it will reserve the needed space and other resources in order to enable the export traffic. Extra traffic is most welcome, stated the port.

“As a modern logistic centre, the harbour in Vuosaari offers efficient possibilities to handle this traffic, which increases the entire export traffic from Finland. This letter of intent will impact the Finnish community in diverse ways by revitalising economic life, says Kimmo Mäki, managing director of the Port of Helsinki

“We estimate that this extra traffic may create up to 100 jobs in different parts of the logistic chain. Metsä Fibre Oy mentioned 800,000t [a year], which would mean an increase of approximately 10% in the traffic of Vuosaari harbour in Helsinki, if realised.

This is one of the biggest increases in business that we have seen for some years. We have many reasons to be content.”
