US coal production stable but consumption falls

US coal production during Q2 2019 totalled 179.2 million short tons (MMst), which was 0.2% lower than the previous quarter and 0.9% lower than Q2 2018, according to the latest quarterly figures from the US Energy Administration (EIA).

Production in the Western region, which represented about 52.7% of total US coal production in Q2 2019, totalled about 94.4 MMst (0.2% lower than Q2 2018).


US coal exports for Q2 2019 (25.3 MMst) increased 0.4% from Q1 2019. The average price of US coal exports during Q2 2019 was US$112.2 per short ton.


The US continued to import coal primarily from Colombia (71.5%), Canada (14.5%), and Indonesia (11.7%). No imports from Australia were recorded for Q2 2019. US coal imports in Q2 2019 totalled 1.6 MMst. The average price of US coal imports during Q2 2019 was US$84.78 per short ton.


Steam coal exports totalled 10.2 MMst (10.3% lower than Q1 2019). Metallurgical coal exports totalled 15.1 MMst (9.2% higher than Q1 2019).


US coal consumption totalled 129.6 MMst in Q2 2019, which was 17.8% lower than the 157.6 MMst reported in Q1 2019, and 17.3% lower than the 156.6 MMst reported in Q2 2018. The electric power generation sector accounted for about 90.8% of the total US coal consumption in Q2 2019.


In Q2 2019, coal stocks grew to 143.8 MMst from 125.3 MMst at the end of Q1 2019 (a 14.7% increase). Stocks in the electric power generation sector increased to 116.5 MMst from 97.1 MMst at the end of Q1 2019.
