Transnet inks manganese deal with Kalagadi

South African transport utility Transnet has announced plans to provide rail and port access to seven new emerging manganese mining companies to promote diversity in the sector.

Bedeschi is supplying a system for the feeding, handling and storage of manganese at the new Moanda Manganese Mine in Eastern Gabon.

The Ghanaian port of Takoradi has handled its biggest ever vessel, the 210,666 dwt GOLDEN SPRAY manganese ore carrier. The port had previously only handled ships up to 175,000 dwt. The vessel, which is 300m long and 49m wide, loaded 203,500t of manganese ore for shipment to China.

South African manganese, iron ore and other dry bulk production fell massively over the second quarter of 2020 because of the impact of COVID-19 and the associated lockdown.

The Namibian port of Lüderitz has begun to ship manganese mined in South Africa and transported to the port by rail.
