Sumitomo-aligned Australian grain trader Emerald is keen to expand its Melbourne Port Terminal (MPT) after loading a record 185,000t in February. MPT’s previous highest export month was 145,000t in July 2012 and the record was expected to be broken again in March.

Another of Australia’s grain marketers and handlers has moved into foreign hands after Japan’s Sumitomo took full control of the previously half-owned Emerald Group. Victoria-centred Emerald was established in 2004 and grew to operate 17 up-country terminals as well as the Appleton Dock bulk facility in the port of Melbourne, marketing 4.5 Mtpa of grain. Sumitomo acquired its original holding in 2012 when it merged its Australian Bulk Alliance with Emerald.
