Salvage work on the Ultra Galaxy has accelerated as weather conditions improved but may face delays due to severe weather expected this weekend.

The Ultra Galaxy has gone aground near South Africa, prompting urgent efforts to prevent a fuel spill and salvage its fertiliser cargo.

The volume of mining commodities handled by Transnet has fallen from 181.1 Mt in financial year 2020-21 to 149.5 Mt in 2022-23, with coal particularly affected.

Now operating the facility under the name ‘Reload Dry Bulk Richards Bay Facility’, the warehouse joins Reload’s portfolio, covering all of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Coal exports from Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) declined by 4% in 2018, on lower exports to South Korea.

Anglo American achieved a 7% increase in total production on a copper equivalent basis in Q4 2018, excluding the effect of the stoppage at Minas-Rio.
