Mississippi shipping hits the rocks

The drought in the US Midwest could cause barge operations to cease on a section of the Mississippi River in January when the required 9ft draught will fall to 8ft. The American Waterway Operators (AWO) and Waterways Council Inc (WCI) warned that “commerce could come to an effective halt” because the majority of tow boats require a minimum 9ft draught.
