First LHM 800 bulkers

Standard

The fifth and sixth units of Liebherr’s giant LHM 800 mobile harbour crane design, the world’s biggest MHCs to date, will be the first two to be operated principally as grab cranes, in a four-rope/ double winch configuration. The ‘launch’ customer for the bulk crane is Saqr Port Authority, Ras al-Khaimah, UAE – an existing customer with a fleet of eight Liebherr MHCs and a Liebherr crane operator training centre.

The LHM 800 in bulk handling configuration comes with a 54m boom and a maximum lifting capacity under hook of 144t. Equipped with a four-rope grab, the design has a capacity of 55.1t (grab + cargo) at 52m outreach. Matching the world’s biggest gantry grab unloaders, the grab + load capacity exceeds 80t out to 40m outreach, although this depends on the capacity and size of the grabs selected. Through-the-ship capacity of coal is estimated by Liebherr at 1,500 tph in standard drive configuration, rising to 2,300 tph with its hybrid Pactronic drive, which Saqr Port has opted for on both cranes.

The cranes will operate on recently created deepwater berths capable of accommodating Capesize vessels. They will be delivered fully assembled from Liebherr in Rostock at the beginning of 2018, and commissioned two to three months later.

Liebherr has also reported  that the two LHM 800s ordered by the first customer for this design, Montecon in Montevideo, have now been commissioned. Montecon had asked for an even bigger MHC than the Liebherr LHM 600, of which it has three. It took four years from concept design to commissioning.
