Sena on track for completion

Vale transported 10 Mt of coal from its open cast Moatize mine to the ports of Beira and Nacala in the first 10 months of this year.

In anticipation of much bigger coal exports in the near future, Mozambique continues to build rail and port infrastructure.

Portuguese engineering firm Mota-Engil and China National Complete Engineering Corporation (CNCEC) have put pen to paper on a contract to transport coal from the Tete coal mines to a planned new coal port at Macuse.

Plans for Mozambique’s third coal port have been approved. It will be built at Macuse, in Zambezia Province and near the mouth of the River Zambezi, between the two existing coal ports of Beira and Nacala.

It appears that Vale’s coal trains on the Sena line to the Port of Beira did not run between late July and November because of attacks by Renamo fighters, suggesting that the situation was much worse than previously admitted.

The government of Mozambique has announced US$3B of new private sector investment in the Nacala railway. The line, which connects the Moatize coal mines in Tete Province in the northwest of Mozambique with the Indian Ocean port of Nacala, currently has handling capacity of 22 Mtpa.
