Falling demand and prices combined with rising costs has stymied two major Australian coal terminal developments, against a broader industry backdrop of mine closures and employee layoffs. The newly merged Glencore Xstrata (GX) halted its Balaclava Island Coal Export Terminal (BICET) in Queensland, calling into question the fate of the group’s planned Wandoan coal mine.
