During the past 20 years seaborne dry bulk trades are estimated to have risen by an average of 2.6 percent/year and reached around 2.1 bill tons on a worldwide basis in 2002. This rate of growth has been much slower than growth in general cargo trades, particularly containers, but nevertheless on a tonnes shipped basis, dry bulks are second only to liquid bulks (2.25 bill tonnes) in importance.
