During his campaign for the presidency, Donald Trump made some big promises to the US coal sector, but can he deliver?

One of US President Donald Trump’s biggest election pledges was to “bring the coal industry back 100%”. This year’s spike in US coal exports might suggest that his policies are beginning to feed through. Yet higher exports have little to do with any support given by Washington, while domestic demand, which accounts for about 90% of production, remains under threat. At the same time, plans for new coal export capacity are struggling to clear environmental hurdles.
