Strong finish for St. Lawrence Seaway season

The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) said that “the modest increase” followed a five-year freeze on toll rates and “underscores the SLSMC’s determination to maintain the positive momentum generated by its market development initiatives”.

Strong demand for key North American commodities such as coal, iron ore and Canadian grain have fuelled a positive start for the St. Lawrence Seaway shipping season.

According to the St Lawrence Seaway Authority, between January and the end of July this year 1884 vessels had transited the seaway carrying 18.984 mt of cargo. This compares with 1621 ships carrying 17.04 mt in the same period last year.
