Coal drives Russian Far East port expansion

Russia’s biggest dedicated coal handling terminal in Vostochniy has been operating above installed capacity for a number of years. The port accounts for most of the 16 mtpa of coal exported through Russian Far East (RFE) ports, but Russian miners, encouraged by rising coal prices, already want to export at least 20 mta to Asia-Pacific countries. Asian-Pacific demand for coal is forecast to grow to 320 mta by 2010 and Russia’s export facilities today cannot cater for demand on this scale.
