Indonesia’s coal trade has faced disruption from terrorism.

Last April, the coal ports of Banjarmasin and Tarakan on Kalimantan prevented ships taking coal to the Philippines after the Al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf network kidnapped crew in a series of ship hijackings.
The Philippines imports 15 Mtpa of coal from Indonesia for its power plants, which represents 70% of its coal imports. To avoid “another Somalia”, Indonesian authorities have stepped up security around the Sulu Sea.
