Railway to Macuse

Portuguese engineering firm Mota-Engil and China National Complete Engineering Corporation (CNCEC) have put pen to paper on a contract to transport coal from the Tete coal mines to a planned new coal port at Macuse.

The government of Mozambique has announced US$3B of new private sector investment in the Nacala railway. The line, which connects the Moatize coal mines in Tete Province in the northwest of Mozambique with the Indian Ocean port of Nacala, currently has handling capacity of 22 Mtpa. The profits of Mozambican rail and port operator Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) have jumped by a quarter over the past six months, continuing a recent trend. State-owned transport utility Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) has announced plans to raise US$2.3B to fund its share of new coal industry rail and port infrastructure. Some of the funds will be used to finance improvements to the Sena coal line, plus the rebuilding of two bridges on the Ressano Garcia line between South Africa and the Port of Maputo. The government of Mozambique has announced that the upgrade of the Sena Line between Moatize and the port of Beira will be completed by the end of March, 21 months after it began. The work will more than triple the railway’s handling capacity from 6.5 to 20 Mtpa. A Portuguese joint venture of Edivisia and Mota-Engil is undertaking the work under a €163M contract. Funding for the project was arranged by Standard Bank Mozambique, an offshoot of South Africa’s Standard Bank.
